Ways to Remember a Grandparent - Activities for the Child
Simple Penny Memory
As soon as you see a penny, show the child and explain to them that this is a memory of Grandpa and that he is watching over them. Try to remember to pick the pennies up when you see them and show them to the child so they will remember in their later years.
Pictures and Talks
Keep talking about Grandpa and looking at pictures of him. The child needs to see that it is okay to look and talk about somebody who is dead. They might be wondering if they'll die soon, just like granpa died. Reassure them that one person's death doesn't have anything to do with them. The way that you teach your children to relate to serious issues will be reflected in how they teach their own children. The talks that you share with your child during these times will be remembered for many years to come.
"I wish you the best in talking to your child and I hope that you are inspired to talk to your child about any issue that arises. Losing a loved one is never easy for a child but how we respond can make all the difference. Lets work together to build a common bond between children and parents in discussing such serious issues." - Jennifer Dozier
Videos and DVD's
Many children respond well to videos and DVD. Some of the online dvd rental sites may have options for sharing with your children. You can read about GameZnFlix to see what their current offering includes for children.
