Why is grandpa laying in that(coffin)?
If you decide to take the child to the funeral they will see that grandpa is lying in the coffin and he is not moving. This might bring about questions of what is he doing. Depending on their age they do not necessarily need to be at the funeral since they would not remember the funeral anyway. Explain to the child that grandpa is lying there but he is also in heaven with the angel watching over you from above. Let the child know that grandpa is okay where he is at and that he is not in any pain and there is nobody to hurt him or harm him. The child might need some clarification about how grandpa went from here (earth) to Heaven. You can explain this by using easy analogies related to Jesus. If the child understands Jesus they might be able to comprehend Heaven. Revert back to the book and show them that picture where grandpa is looking over the cloud back at the child.
Why is everyone crying if grandpa is in Heaven?
The expression of feelings from the adults is a memory the child will take with them if they are not too young. Explain that the tears are from not being able to see grandpa for a long time, until we get to Heaven. They are tears that he is not in any pain and that he is safe, but they are also tears of what is going to happen next without the wonderful person here. You can explain in a manner that is at their level. For example, tell the child that next time they go to grandma's house grandpa will not be there and this makes you sad. Explain that your love goes on and that it does not stop just because you do not see the person anymore. Love is forever and eternal. Love of family members is important and remains important.
Where is grandpa?
He is in Heaven and lives with the angels. You will not see grandpa until it is your time to go to Heaven. Make sure that they understand that they too will go someday to Heaven. Make sure they understand that next time when they go over to grandma's that they will not see grandpa. This is one question that you will answer over and over again.
